Sherry
Bass
Full name: Shaheryar Ghayas
Profile: Autopsy Gothic, kNumB & Surge,
plus sessions here and there.
Inspirations: Pantera, Sepultura, Korn, Rage Against
the Machine, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Guns N' Roses,
Tool, Incubus etcetera
Other Talents: Harmonies/Backing vocals.
My cousin Faraz first introduced me to Guns N' Roses
when I was 15. That was the beginning. I got my hands
on all the music I could get (there was no internet
that time, and a very limited number of bands available
at the stores). The experience that really enticed me
to pick up the guitar was watching a live jam session.
I borrowed a friend's guitar, which I learnt on. Practiced
along with tapes, and that's what got me started.
As I started off listening to Guns N' Roses, Slash
was my first guitar hero! I dug out everything about
him that I could (e.g. his real name's Saul Hudson)!
However, as I discovered more bands, I found a wide
array of amazing musicians, without comparison. If you
push me on contradicting myself here, I think it will
be Dimebag Darrell. He was a musician and a half; sadly
no longer among us.
The bass is often considered either non-existent or
a supporting role in a band - I feel it is always underrated.
To be a good and leading bass player, you can't just
play note by note, you have to play freely and flirtatiously.
If you don't let yourself go and aren't willing to flirt
with several out notes at the same time, you're just
an ordinary bass player. There's TOO much to be learnt
on bass. There are so many things I've just discovered,
and I feel like I'm starting to learn an instrument,
all over again.
I feel my presence in "Surge" solely indebted
to the mutual love for music that each member of the
band has. Each individual shares the same passion for
creation of original sounds which intensifies the chemistry
within the band. The music exudes social-consciousness,
igniting not only anthems within us, but also without,
in others. If it makes you feel the same way listening
to our music as we do while we make it, we have proved
our point; we've made that difference.
